‘Passeur á La Goulette’
‘En 1926, Marquet, qui n’avait
pas oublié l’enchantement de
Sidi-Bou-Said, eut envie de
jouir de sa lumière fine et
légère et pour changer un peu
de point de vue, il s’installa
à La Goulette, à l’entrée du
port de Tunis.’

The man rowing the boat out of the picture
Looks like ‘Chocolat’,
The negro dancer at the ‘Moulin Rouge’,
Who was painted by Toulouse Lautrec.
It’s the vigorous pose,
And his outfit
Which resembles a cat-suit,
That suggests this.
In fact, he’s the ferry-man,
Going home for his lunch
I reckon,
Cous-cous perhaps,
Or sardines.
And some dates for after,
Or prickly-pear.
Then coffee,
Or tea.
Suppose it were ‘Chocolat’ –
Retired from acrobatic dancing,
Reconciled and recast with his former rival
From the cabaret,
And domiciled together
In one of the red-roofed villas on the shore –
A neat conclusion –
‘Chocolat et La Goulou à La Goulette’.
